SDSN, Bertelsmann Stiftung Invites Comments

The Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and Bertelsmann Stiftung are organizing a public consultation on the 2019 edition of the Sustainable Development Report. The report includes the SDG Index and Dashboards, which provide a “tracking map” of each country’s performance in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals.

The 2019 SDG Preliminary Index introduces new indicators for several purposes:

  • SDG 1 (no poverty): Poverty figure of US $ 3.20 per day (percentage of population).
  • SDG 2 (zero hunger): reducing the yield gap (percentage), and human trophic level.
  • SDG 4 (quality education): completion rate of lower secondary education (in percentage).
  • SDG 5 (gender equality): gender gap in minutes spent per day on unpaid work (minutes).
  • SDG 8 (decent work and economic growth): fatal occupational accidents included in imports (fatal accidents per 100,000 population).
  • SDG 13 (climate action): people affected by climate-related disasters (per 100,000 population).
  • SDG 15 (life on earth): commodity-based deforestation, average annual percentage over five years.
  • SDG 16 (peace, justice and strong institutions): incarcerated inmates as a proportion of the total prison population; and index of freedom of the press.

The preliminary index uses four types of color-coded arrows to indicate progress or lack of progress on each sustainable development goal. The arrows indicate if a country: maintains a performance superior to the achievement of its objectives; on track to achieve the goal; to increase moderately its performances; stagnant; or decrease in its progress toward the achievement of an objective.

During the public consultation, open until 17 May 2019, SDSN and Bertelsmann Stiftung invite comments on the preliminary scoreboards, the data sources used, the data sources to be included, the thresholds used to indicate the achievement of the objective and the proposed analysis of the trend data.
